The Castle of Curiel de Duero is the most ancient fortress in the province of Valladolid for it was built in the Roman date (a coin of Emperor Arcadius, from the fourth century AD, was found on site during the reconstruction works). From Peñafiel you should take the road VA-101 "Carretera de Pesquera de Duero" to the north, turning then rightwards to "Curiel de Duero".
Situated on a stoned hill, at 927 metres height, it was practically impregnable; even that today its image surprises those who visit it, when asking themselves how it was possible to be built in such a place, and the effort that supposed its recovering from the inavitable lost of its historical ruins.
